Can fat be consumed without restriction during Keto?

By Coach Sharm and Team

Although the ketogenic diet is high in fat, this doesn’t mean that all fats and oils should be consumed without restriction. It’s not only about the quantity, but also the quality of the fat that is consumed. Also, the amount of fats should still fit within a person’s overall caloric needs.

People who lose some weight initially and then hit a plateau, is quite common in weight loss journeys, not just with the ketogenic diet. The initial weight loss might be more rapid due to the body depleting its glycogen stores and losing water weight, but once this initial phase is over, the rate of weight loss often slows.

In terms of adding extra oil to their foods, if people are simply adding excessive amounts of oil without considering their total calorie intake, they may be consuming too many calories to maintain a deficit, which could inhibit further weight loss. Even though the ketogenic diet is high in fats, it’s still important to maintain a balance and not consume calories in excess of what your body needs.

Adding a large amount of extra fat also isn’t necessary for the ketogenic diet to be effective. Consuming moderate amounts of high-quality fats (like those found in avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish like salmon) can be sufficient for maintaining ketosis.

Also, keep in mind that each person’s body is different. The diet that works best for one person might not work as well for another. If your friends have hit a weight loss plateau, it might be a good time for them to reassess their approach to the ketogenic diet, their overall eating patterns, their physical activity levels, and other lifestyle factors that can impact weight loss. It might also be beneficial for them to consult a registered dietitian or another healthcare provider who can provide personalized advice based on their specific needs and goals.

In conclusion, while dietary fats are an important part of the ketogenic diet, it’s not necessary (and it might not be beneficial) to add excessive amounts of oil to foods. The focus should be on consuming high-quality fats within a balanced, nutrient-rich eating pattern that aligns with your overall calorie needs.
